EV Charging Stations

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Location: Alameda

Participation: 21 members

We had our first meeting at our new meeting location at the Rhythmix Cultural Works in Alameda. With those present we elected our Chapter leadership for the new year. Our new President is Tom Keenan (moved up from VP last year), Vice President is Paul Cooper (has been our Pres for the last 5 years) and Secretary/Treasure is Ed Thorpe (for many years). We had discussion about someone to be our point person for Chapter Events, which Scott Cornell and Ed Thorpe have handled in the past, but decided to leave this position open for now. At each meeting we will announce upcoming rallies and event, like the National EAA Annual meeting taking place in February.

For this meeting we were going to have a presentation by Coulomb Technologies, but at the last minute they had to reschedule. We might have them back in April or May.

Fortunately Tom Keenan stepped in to present the topic of the current state of EV Charging Stations. Here's his presentation in PDF form, with some high lights.

This is the first J1772 Level 2 charging station in Alameda, across from the Police Department, on Oak St. It is a ChargePoint station which requires a special card to unlock the connection. Option is calling a toll-free 800 number.

At the opening / dedication of the charging stations at the Oakland Airport, a variety of EVs showed up - Volt, Leaf, even plug-in Prius.

The current best place for searching and updates on charging locations is Recargo.com. It includes a free App for Iphones. This App identifies locations close to you and provides monitoring while charging.

Another source is Plugshare.com, for non-public locations.

EVs on display in the parking lot after the meeting.
